The Hesnes Canal

This canal was built in order to ensure a secure route for small vessels that passed from the Hesnes Island to the city of Grimstad. Before the Hesnes Canal was built, a wooden bridge was being used. The Germans, who aimed to have a shortcut towards the defence amenities at Marivold, erected this bridge long ago. Today, the Hesnes Canal can be crossed by boat and this may be an enjoyable trip for you and your family.
