Situated at 6 kilometres from Bergen’s centre
Gamlehaugen (“meaning The Old Hill”) is the royal residence of the king. Gamlehaugen
was built in 1901 by Christian
Michelsen, former prime minister,
during the separation of Norway
from Sweden.
After 1925, Gamlehaugen was bought by the state and Prince
Haakon lived there when he was studying at the Naval Academy.
Parts of the castle are opened to the public except on Mondays. Guide tours are
45 minutes long and cost 50 NOK for adults and 25 NOK for children.
